Outgrowing the leader who got you here

Mehalah Beckett, founder of Lead Powerful Impact, reflecting on freedom as a growth strategy for purpose-driven leadership

Your identity is your most powerful tool as a leader. Yet the version of you that got this far may be holding you back. Sometimes the next level of impact isn’t about doing more. It’s about letting go.

And I don’t just mean delegating tasks, handing over projects, or building systems. I mean letting go of who you are right now as a leader.

It’s something I’m becoming more and more aware of; as what I want to create in the world shifts, grows, and evolves, so do I.

I nearly said “so must I”, but that’s not right. For one, I don’t believe in “musts” and “shoulds” anymore – life’s too short. But I AM also always changing, evolving, and growing, which is where my amplified dreams and goals come from. There’s no need to change to achieve my next level of success; it’s just a case of shedding the older identity (that we hold onto tightly) that no longer serves us, serves me, beyond keeping me safe.

The version of me that got this far, the one who works harder than everyone else, needs everyone to like them, has it all figured out, can solve everyone’s problems, won’t get me to the next level. And it won’t get you there either, whatever your version of this is.

Growing your impact is not a strategy problem. It is an identity upgrade. And it’s already happening, you just need to surrender to it. That is all.

You might feel friction, doubt, or discomfort – that’s normal when you’re evolving:

  • You might need to stop being the smartest person in the room

  • You might need to release control over how things get done

  • You might need to sit with uncertainty without labelling it as failure

Letting go can feel like losing status even when it’s exactly what growth requires. When you do, here’s what might be possible:

  • You create space for your team to shine

  • You expand your capacity to lead with influence instead of effort

  • You unlock impact that’s energised, passion-fuelled, and sustainable.

What got you here won’t get you there...

Your next level is already waiting for you. You just have to be willing to leave behind the version of yourself that got you here. Because as they say, “what got you here won’t get you there” but the good news I’m celebrating with you today, is you already have what will get you to your next level, you just need to drop what no longer serves you.

If this resonates, here’s a question:

Which identity am I holding on to that’s stopping me from owning what I want to achieve next?

Growth leadership is not about adding more to your plate. It’s releasing what no longer serves you, including an old identity. If exploring this feels like a gold mine, get in touch, we should talk, it’s what I do for a living.
