How to Lead Impact

  1. Be You

  2. Trust You

  3. It’s not about You.

Were the three key lessons from my impact journey I shared in a speech on Leading Impact at the Scottish Tourism Conference in Edinburgh last week.

See below for the bonus number 4....

Be You – when I show up as me, I do the best I can. When I show up to please, placate, be more palatable, or trying to be something I’m not, I don’t. Throughout my career I have consistently moved into roles that have allowed me to ‘be more me’ (I wasn’t a particularly detailed financial analyst, shrewd economist or diplomatic civil servant)! But it’s not about your environment, its inside out, not outside in. Yes, an encouraging environment helps, but being you is something only you can give yourself permission to be. So give yourself that gift today. And see your impact accelerate.

Trust You – I’ve made some decisions in my career that people have called brave and stupid. “Please tell me you took a sabbatical from the diplomatic service” “please tell me you have a job to go to after Intrepid”. Nope. I just quit because I knew I could have more impact in the travel industry than government across Africa. And I knew I would make my coaching business a success. I just knew. Trust that knowing. You have an inbuilt guidance system that ensures you will know just what to do when the times comes. Listen to it. Act on it. Ignore the naysayers. They’re just scared. And they're not you.

Its’ not about You – when I make it about me, and get in my head about how I’ll come cross, how I’ll muck it up, what so and so will think of me, I don’t do well. I wish I’d have known then what I know now, but hey, I didn’t, and I often got in my head and did a disservice to myself, my team and the people I was trying to help. So, attention out. Focus on the task at hand, on the person in front of you. And on the impact you want to have in the world.

Pass it On – support others to be themselves, to trust themselves and to get out of their heads. That’s how you’ll truly amplify your impact!

And – I’ve got your back. Share one insight from this and tell me, what one action will you take on it?

My mission in life is to support good leaders accelerate their impact in the world, so if you’re done with going it alone and would love to partner with a coach who’s got your back, get in touch for a chat. I’ve got you.
