January goals craze is over, now set goals for focus…

New year, new business coach for me, and had to set three SMART goals for the first half of the year.

So I did what I always did: started with an instinctive idea of what they’d be, then spent a week reading and researching what business goals should look like, then gave into my initial instinct. When am I going to learn to trust my instinct? (My academic upbringing is hard is shake).

I thought I’d share, as I work with many executives and senior managers in organisations who are in the process of setting their objectives for the year – so maybe this will help you too – whether you run a business/NGO or a department within one. Goals help us focus, and focus is something we all want more of; our time and energy are scarce, and the more aligned our actions are to our mission, the more happy we will be, both in and out of work.

Question to ask yourself, what am I all about? What’s the change I want to see in the world? In the system? In my workplace? In myself?

I set up Lead Powerful Impact to support leaders accelerate their impact sustainably. That’s sustainably for people, the planet and themselves.

I work with leaders on a mission for social and/or environmental impact, so to be honest, the first two are a given, they just need more focus to accelerate those.

The third; leading themselves in a sustainable way – is harder for those passionate about what they do – they can both never do enough and are paradoxically doing too much. Burnout Territory. Takes one to know one. But I got you on this. It requires a whole new level of focus. Focus on you. Which is hard for givers and people pleasers. Again trust me, I know. Been there, done that, got the T-shirt, still working on it...

I support leaders accelerate their income, influence and impact sustainably, and so instinctively, these were the three categories I used to set my six-month objectives. And they felt good, because they were aligned to how I wanted to show up in the world and lead by example.

What would those categories be for you?
