The Problem with Self-Diagnosis

What problems are you self-diagnosing and applying solutions to, that just go round and round like a broken record?

When people come to me as coaching clients, they’ve already decided what their problem is, and what the solution to the problem is, and they want my help implementing the solution they have come up with to the problem that they’ve self-diagnosed.

The problem with that, is people are terrible at self-diagnosing. Most of the time they’ve identified the problem inaccurately, so the solution, while perhaps wonderful for the problem they’ve come up with, is irrelevant to their situation, and me helping them get better at something that won’t help them, is not the most helpful thing I can do.

And I’m no exception; this week I came to my coach with my usual broken record of “I’m doing too much, I’m spreading myself too thin, I’m dropping the ball and not having the impact I know I can have – Help!”

He called B*llsh*t on that, and we went deeper to get to the problem that REALLY hurt; when we got there, he felt it, and so did I – yes there were tears. But only then could he support me to create the appropriate solution, that would really move the needle on how I was showing up and creating positive change in the world. The answer in case you’re curious – raising my standards. Simple, not easy, but my coach has my back. And now maybe I’ve shared this, you do too?

What are the problems you are self-diagnosing and applying solutions to, that are just going round and round like a broken record, neither fixing nor moving your forward?

Time for a new tune? Come and run them by me and we’ll get you rocking.
